Centre for Advancement of Traditional Building Technology and Skills (CATTS) has taken upon itself the task of promoting safeguarding and conservation of unprotected heritage assets in Indian cities and towns. CATTS is a not-for-profit organization working in the area of heritage conservation and management since 2001. Set up with the objective of preservation, protection and promotion of built heritage, monuments, places and objects of artistic or historic interest through people’s participation CATTS has been working with a vision to highlight local heritage assets, empower local communities and promote sustainability in heritage conservation.
We specialize in research, documentation, awareness generation, valorization, capacity building, technical assistance and skill development. Our activities are part of a programmatic effort for problem solving and therefore initiatives of CATTS are campaigns and not projects, involving working closely with local partners and the community.
We are currently working extensively in three diverse cultural areas, one in Bharatpur district which forms part of the famous Braj region and the other in the Shekhawati region both in Rajasthan. We are also working in Sindhudurg district in Maharashtra for mapping and documentation of unprotected heritage resources. Heritage in all the three regions is facing very different challenges and CATTS has been instrumental in highlighting the issues and developing strategies for countering those challenges. CATTS has also set up this digital cultural platform, ‘India Heritage Hub’ for sharing of heritage related information, activities and awareness generation amongst people.
All current initiatives and activities of CATTS as well as all future ones are aligned to its overall vision of sensitizing people for conservation and protection of cultural heritage resources, making heritage conservation participatory and sustainable.
