Bharatpur is a city famous for its bird sanctuary but there is much more to the city than is popularly known. Unfortunately the built heritage of the city has so far gone unrecognized. In order to present the rich heritage of the walled city of Bharatpur a mapping exercise was undertaken. The exercise revealed various layers of the city’s historic past as well as architectural wealth and a wide variety of built heritage like palaces, mansions, havelis, shops, bazaars, dharamshalas, temples, mosques, kachahari, fort, fortification wall, bastion, pavilions, chhatri, wells, tanks and ghats were identified. The outcomes of the detailed survey of the city have been compiled in the form of a pioneering book. The book Bharatpur: Built Heritage Resource Mapping not only celebrates the hitherto unknown dimension of the history and culture of Bharatpur but also showcases the invaluable built heritage assets defining the rich character of the city. Besides giving an analytical account of the historic context of Bharatpur the book has an inventory of 353 heritage properties along with notes and detailed maps giving precise location of each heritage property.
